Clinical Effect of Honey Dressing

Abstract

|
Medical properties of honey have been recognized since antiquity. It was used as a wound dressing to treat infected wounds. Furthermore, honey dressings create a moist environment for wound healing. The dressings, with their high sugar content, also display a high level of osmotic activity. This results in an outflow of lymph from the wounds, assisting in debridement and edema reduction. This study was conducted to investigate the value of honey dressing as topical treatment for various wounds by reporting our clinical experiences. Thirty-two patients with wounds of various etiologies were treated with honey dressing (Medihoney®; Derma Sciences Inc., Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Dressing was changed every 1 to 4 days for 12 weeks. Changes of grade and stage of wounds-size, bioburden, slough, exudate, and dermatitis-were recorded every 4 weeks. The ulcer size decreased in 30 patients (93.8%). There was significant improve in the slough (P＜0.05), amount of discharge (P＜0.05) and dermatitis (P=0.08). Microorganism was isolated in 19 patients (59.4%) at the initial assessment. At the end of study, 8 ulcers (25%) only showed presence of bacteria. Overall, positive healing result was achieved in 93.8% of ulcers. This study proves that honey dressing is an effective dressing for wound care.
